HVAC Heater – Troubleshooting

If your heat isn’t keeping up when it’s cold outside, there are a few things you can try to fix the problem:

1. Check your thermostat: Make sure that your thermostat is set to the desired temperature and that it is on the “heat” setting. If the thermostat is set to the wrong temperature or is on the wrong setting, it may not be turning on your heating system.
2. Check your furnace filter: A dirty furnace filter can restrict airflow and make it difficult for your heating system to keep up. Change the filter and see if that helps.
3. Check for drafts: Look for drafts around windows and doors, which can let in cold air and make it harder for your heating system to keep up. Seal any drafts with weatherstripping or caulking to keep the cold air out.
4. Check for blockages: Make sure that there are no blockages in your ducts or vents that could be preventing warm air from circulating through your home.
5. Check the pilot light: If you have a gas furnace, make sure the pilot light is lit. If it’s not, you’ll need to relight it.
6. If you have a heat pump, very common in Charlotte, when it is really cold outside (40 degrees or lower, it is very difficult for older heat pumps to keep the heat at your normal temperature. The system is just not designed to sustain the internal temperature. If the internal temperature drops below 60 degrees and stays below 60 degrees during the day, report it in your tenant portal. 
7. If the HVAC heat is still not working, it may be a more serious issue. Please place a request in your Residence Portal (provide as much information as possible to help us expedite the repair and maintenance).

Additionally, in the meantime, to keep warm, you can try adding extra layers of clothing and/or closing off rooms that aren’t in use. Electric or gas/propane space heaters are not allowed at anytime.
